What is Equine Facilitated Occupational Therapy
Equine Assisted Occupational Therapy (EAOT) is a therapeutic approach that integrates horses into traditional occupational therapy practices to help individuals achieve their therapy goals. In this modality, occupational therapists use interactions with horses as a means to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social goals. Clients engage in activities such as grooming, leading, riding, and caring for horses, which can improve balance, coordination, sensory processing, communication, self-confidence, and emotional regulation.
The presence of horses in therapy sessions can also foster trust, empathy and connection, providing unique therapeutic benefits not typically found in traditional settings. Equine assisted occupational therapy is particularly effective for individuals with a wide range of conditions, including autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, and physical disabilities.
I currently practice at Muirfield Riding Therapy .This is a charity that provides free therapeutic ridden and non ridden sessions for people with varying degrees of functional impairment or mental health conditions. Equine Facilitated Therapy | Muirfield Riding Therapy
